How to boost your business’s organic rankings on Google | Digital Ethos | Open Mic

Every business wants their website and web pages to rank highly on Google, but to sit on the first page of Google’s organic search results for some competitive keywords can be difficult. However, it can be well worth the time and effort as it can lead to quality website traffic.

You may be thinking, that’s all well and good, but how do I boost my organic rankings?

That’s where we come in. We’re here to offer some of the most fundamental strategies to help you improve your online visibility and organic SEO rankings. And whilst Google continually adjusts its algorithm, we have some basic practices that will help you regardless of those small changes.

Keywords

Ranking well for every keyword in your industry is virtually impossible and an unreasonable task, which is why you will need to focus and secure a few high-ranking keywords first. To figure out which keywords you want to rank organically for, making a list is a must. By making a list of industry-related keywords, you can research the search volume for it and how competitive it is to rank for that specific term.

Using Ahrefs, Google’s Keyword Planner or similar tools, you will want to find keywords that offer high search volumes (anywhere from 100-1,000+ searches a month) that have a low to mid keyword difficulty (look for something below 50 to start with) that have a low to mid keyword difficulty (look for something below 50 to start with).

Go through each keyword and find out the search volume and keyword difficulty until you have the perfect combination. It’s this process that will help you to find the keywords you should be trying to secure.

Metadata

You probably already know, but just to be sure, metadata is data that summarises larger data. Metadata can be broken down into many different segments such as meta titles and meta descriptions.

Meta titles, also known as meta tags, always refer back to the text found in the search engine results and browser tabs. It’s this title (or tag) that helps online users to better understand the topic of the webpage. The recommended length of a meta title is under 60 characters, so keep it simple and concise.

As for meta descriptions, they sit underneath a meta title found in search engine results and consist of 150-160 characters. It’s this part of the metadata that allows you to elaborate on the meta title. The meta description helps you to drive traffic, so consider this as your opportunity to convince people that your content is worth reading or viewing. When filling out your 150-160 characters for your meta description, use phrases such as ‘all you need to know’ or ‘find out more’.

It’s important to note that meta descriptions aren’t as important as meta titles when it comes to Google’s ranking algorithm, but it’s a great way to hook your target audience. So be sure to improve your click-through rate by describing the page accurately – you’ll thank yourself later.

Page speed

User experience is everything in this day and age. Research by Google suggests that 53% of mobile website users will abandon a webpage in three seconds if it fails to load properly.

This goes to show that page speed is crucial to your website. A good site speed will bag you a low bounce rate and is likely to improve your visibility online. If you’re at all unsure about your site loading speed, take a look at Google Search Console. This platform will provide you with the information you need to help improve your site speed.

Things that typically slow down site speed include large images and too many redirects. To prevent this from happening in the first place, remember to compress images and optimise images, be clever with redirects, utilise A/B testing and check your site out on a number of different devices to ensure site speed is optimal.
